Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to remove excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is performed for either cosmetic or functional reasons.
With age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity and the muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. This can result in sagging upper eyelids, droopy lower lids, and puffy bags under the eyes. In some cases, excess skin on the upper eyelid can even obstruct vision.
Blepharoplasty restores a more youthful and alert appearance by tightening the skin and removing bulges, without changing the natural shape of the eyes. The surgery can be performed alone or combined with other facial procedures for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are individuals who are:
This procedure is commonly performed on people over the age of 35, but younger individuals may also benefit if droopy eyelids run in the family. A proper medical evaluation is essential to determine suitability.
Upper eyelid surgery focuses on removing excess skin and sometimes fat from the upper eyelids. This helps correct hooded or droopy eyelids that may give a tired or older appearance and in some cases, improve peripheral vision.
Lower eyelid surgery targets puffiness, under-eye bags, and sagging skin below the eyes. The procedure may involve fat removal or repositioning, skin tightening, or both.
Some patients undergo only one of the two, while others benefit from combined upper and lower eyelid surgery for a more complete rejuvenation. The approach is personalized based on each patient’s needs and facial anatomy.
Eyelid surgery offers both cosmetic and functional benefits, making it one of the most popular facial procedures worldwide. Key advantages include:
Recovery is generally fast, and the outcomes can be both subtle and transformative, enhancing the overall facial expression without looking artificial.
Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference. The surgery generally takes 1 to 2 hours, and can be done as an outpatient procedure.
Incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures, and because they follow the natural lines of the eyelid, any scarring is minimal and usually not noticeable after healing. The goal is to achieve a natural, refreshed look without overcorrection or distortion of the eye shape.
Recovery from eyelid surgery is generally quick and manageable, with most patients returning to normal activities within 7 to 10 days.
Following post-operative instructions closely helps ensure faster healing and optimal aesthetic outcomes.
Eyelid surgery is generally safe when performed by a qualified surgeon, but like any surgical procedure, it carries some potential risks.
Ectropion (outward turning of the lower eyelid — rare)
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is often combined with other facial procedures to achieve more comprehensive and harmonious rejuvenation. While eyelid surgery focuses on the upper and lower eyelids, aging affects the entire face, including the forehead, mid-face, and skin texture. Combining treatments can address multiple concerns in a single recovery period and produce more balanced results.
These combination procedures are tailored to the patient’s facial structure, skin condition, and aesthetic goals. Performing them together not only saves time and cost but also ensures all areas of the face age gracefully and consistently.
A thorough consultation is necessary to determine which combination is right for each individual and to ensure a safe, well-coordinated treatment plan.
Yes, combining eyelid surgery with other facial procedures is a common and effective approach. It allows patients to address multiple aesthetic concerns at once and enjoy more harmonious results. Dr. Boromand often performs blepharoplasty in conjunction with procedures such as:
Combining surgeries can also reduce overall recovery time and cost compared to scheduling each procedure separately. A personalized treatment plan is created based on each patient’s goals, anatomy, and medical suitability.
Dr. Boromand applies modern, precise techniques in eyelid surgery to achieve natural-looking and long-lasting results with minimal scarring and downtime.
Each surgical plan is customized based on eyelid structure, skin type, and whether cosmetic or functional correction is needed.

Can eyelid surgery fix dark circles under the eyes?
Blepharoplasty can help reduce the appearance of under-eye bags, which may improve dark circles caused by shadowing. However, if the pigmentation is skin-deep or vascular, other treatments like laser or fillers may be more effective.
Is eyelid surgery permanent?
While the results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting, the natural aging process continues. Most patients enjoy results for 10+ years, and in many cases, the procedure does not need to be repeated.
At what age can someone consider eyelid surgery?
There is no fixed age, but most candidates are over 35. However, younger individuals with genetic eyelid sagging or puffiness can also be good candidates after proper evaluation.
Can men undergo eyelid surgery too?
Absolutely. Blepharoplasty is increasingly popular among men seeking a more refreshed, alert appearance while maintaining masculine facial features.
Will eyelid surgery make my eyes look bigger?
Not exactly. The procedure doesn’t enlarge the eyes, but by removing sagging skin and puffiness, the eyes often appear more open, youthful, and defined.
Can eyelid surgery be done under local anesthesia?
Yes. In many cases, especially for upper eyelid surgery, local anesthesia with mild sedation is sufficient. Lower eyelid or combined procedures may require general anesthesia.
How soon can I wear makeup after eyelid surgery?
Makeup should be avoided for at least 10–14 days post-surgery, or until incisions are fully healed. Using makeup too early can increase the risk of infection or irritation.
Will I need someone to stay with me after the surgery?
It’s highly recommended to have a companion, especially during the first 24 hours, to help with mobility, medications, and basic needs while you’re recovering.
Can blepharoplasty improve droopy eyelids that interfere with vision?
Yes. Functional upper eyelid surgery can remove excess skin that hangs over the eyelashes and obstructs your field of vision — a medical indication for blepharoplasty.
How soon before a special event should I schedule eyelid surgery?
Ideally, you should allow at least 4 to 6 weeks before an important event to ensure swelling and bruising are fully resolved and results appear natural.

Hello dr boromand I have a problem, I had a combined facial surgery about a month ago that included upper blepharoplasty, a mini facelift, brow bone shaving and a lip lift. One of the reasons I had the blepharoplasty was to improve the symmetry between my eyelids, I was born with mild facial asymmetry (Parry Romberg syndrome), so the right side of my face has always been a bit weaker and smaller.
The surgery itself went fine, but I’m getting a bit worried about how my right eye is healing. Even after 4 weeks, I still can’t fully close my right eye, and it feels dry a lot of the time. Sometimes I even wake up with blurred vision, and throughout the day, it comes and goes. I have been using artificial tears, but strangely, the vision sometimes gets more blurry after using them, not less.
I also noticed that my right eyebrow isn’t moving much at all it is like the muscles around the eye are asleep. My surgeon says that since the right side of my face was already weaker, this might just be a slower recovery, and the muscles need time to “wake up” again. He advised me to massage the eyelid gently and do blinking exercises, and I do feel some improvement for a few seconds after massaging like my eye can close more easily and my vision sharpens briefly. But then it goes back to the same again.
To balance things after surgery, they also injected a bit of Botox on the left side of my forehead and eye area (the stronger side), but now when I smile, my mouth pulls more to the left and it looks a bit unbalanced. I was told this is temporary and due to the Botox, but all of it together has been quite stressful to deal with.
My biggest concern right now is the eye: I am scared that the incomplete blinking or the blurry vision could become a long-term issue. I saw an ophthalmologist too, and he said there’s no serious damage to the eye itself, which is reassuring. But it still feels uncomfortable not knowing how long this healing might take.
After upper blepharoplasty like difficulty blinking fully, dry eye, or blurred vision that comes and goes? Did it eventually go back to normal?
Hello there, What you’re experiencing, difficulty fully closing the eye, dryness, and intermittent blurred vision, can happen after upper blepharoplasty, especially in cases with pre-existing facial asymmetry like yours. When the muscles are already weaker on one side, healing can take longer, and the nerves may need more time to regain full function.
It’s reassuring that your ophthalmologist found no serious damage. The fact that you notice brief improvement after massage and blinking exercises is a positive sign, it means the muscles are responding, just slowly. These symptoms are often temporary and do improve with time, though the timeline varies.
The Botox asymmetry when smiling should also resolve as it wears off over the next few months.
Continue using artificial tears (preferably preservative-free), protect your eye at night (with ointment or taping, if needed), and stay consistent with your massages and exercises. If there’s no steady improvement over the next few weeks, a follow up with both your surgeon and ophthalmologist is important.
Wishing you a smooth and complete recovery.
