Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects a deviated nasal septum, the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the two nostrils. When the septum is significantly off-center or crooked, it can block airflow and lead to chronic breathing problems, nasal congestion, snoring, sinus infections, and reduced quality of life.
The goal of septoplasty is to straighten the septum and open the nasal passages, allowing for normal breathing through both nostrils. Unlike cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty), septoplasty is primarily a functional procedure, though it can be combined with aesthetic corrections if needed.
The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about 30 to 60 minutes. It is done through the inside of the nose with no external scars. Most patients experience a noticeable improvement in breathing within a few weeks after surgery.
Septoplasty can significantly improve nasal function and overall comfort, especially for people who have lived for years with impaired breathing.
Septoplasty is recommended for individuals who have a deviated septum that causes significant nasal obstruction or breathing difficulties. While a mild deviation is common and may not require treatment, more severe cases can affect airflow, sleep quality, and overall health.
You may need septoplasty if:
Septoplasty is not just for comfort, it can also help prevent long-term complications such as sinusitis or sleep apnea, especially when breathing problems are left untreated.
A deviated septum occurs when the thin wall between your nostrils is displaced to one side, which can partially or completely block airflow. Some people may not even realize they have it until symptoms become persistent.
Common signs and symptoms include:
Snoring or mouth breathing, especially at night
Septoplasty offers both functional and long-term health benefits by restoring proper airflow through the nasal passages. Many patients report significant improvements in daily breathing and sleep quality soon after recovery.
Key benefits of septoplasty include:
In some cases, septoplasty can be combined with procedures like turbinate reduction or cosmetic rhinoplasty for even better results, both functionally and aesthetically.
Although septoplasty and rhinoplasty both involve nasal surgery, they serve different purposes and address distinct issues, one functional, the other cosmetic.
Septoplasty is performed to correct a deviated septum, the thin wall inside the nose that separates the nostrils. When the septum is off-center, it can obstruct airflow, causing chronic congestion, difficulty breathing, and frequent sinus problems. Septoplasty focuses on improving nasal function and is performed entirely inside the nose, without changing its outer shape.
Rhinoplasty, in contrast, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at reshaping the external appearance of the nose refining the bridge, tip, or nostrils to create better facial balance. It may also include structural improvements if breathing is affected.
In many cases, both procedures are performed together in what’s called a septorhinoplasty, combining functional correction with aesthetic enhancement.
It’s also important to note that some patients may require a revision surgery often referred to as revision rhinoplasty if they’re unhappy with the results of a previous operation. This may be due to persistent breathing issues, asymmetry, or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome. Revision cases are typically more complex and require an experienced surgeon with a deep understanding of both form and function.
Septoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the deviation. The procedure is done entirely inside the nose, so there are no visible external scars.
During surgery, Doctor carefully lifts the nasal lining, reshapes or removes the deviated portions of cartilage and bone, and repositions the septum to the midline. The nasal lining is then placed back, and soft internal splints may be inserted to support healing.
Since the operation is done through the nostrils, there is minimal trauma to the surrounding tissues. Patients can usually go home the same day and return to light daily activities within a few days.
Your consultation with the surgeon begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and previous nasal issues or surgeries, if any. He will perform a thorough nasal examination, often including endoscopy, to assess the position of your septum and identify the cause of your breathing problems.
You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss expectations, and learn about the surgery and recovery process. If you’re coming from abroad, the team will help you schedule everything in advance and provide instructions for travel, accommodation, and pre-op preparation.

Recovery from septoplasty is generally smooth and straightforward. While individual healing times may vary, most patients experience significant improvement in breathing within a few weeks.
The cost of septoplasty is one of the key considerations for patients suffering from breathing issues caused by a deviated septum. This cost may vary based on several factors, including the severity of the deviation, the presence of additional nasal problems (such as enlarged turbinates), whether it is a first-time surgery or a revision, and if it’s combined with cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty.
As with any surgery, an exact quote can only be provided after a thorough evaluation by the surgeon. However, there are simple ways to get a general estimate of the cost:

Does septoplasty help with snoring or sleep apnea?
Yes, in many cases. If your snoring or mild sleep apnea is caused by nasal obstruction due to a deviated septum, septoplasty can significantly improve airflow and reduce symptoms. However, if the root cause is in the throat or soft palate, other treatments may be needed in addition.
Can allergies cause the same symptoms as a deviated septum?
Yes. Both allergies and a deviated septum can cause nasal congestion, but they have different causes and treatments. An ENT evaluation is important to distinguish between them. Sometimes both issues coexist and need to be treated together.
Will I have nasal packing after the surgery?
The surgeon uses modern techniques that often avoid traditional nasal packing, which many patients find uncomfortable. Instead, soft internal splints may be used to support the healing septum and are typically removed within a few days.
Is septoplasty suitable for teenagers or only adults?
Septoplasty is generally recommended after nasal growth is complete, usually around age 16–18. In some cases where breathing problems are severe, earlier intervention may be considered after careful evaluation.
Can I fly shortly after having septoplasty in Iran?
Most patients are cleared to fly about 7 to 10 days after surgery, once the initial healing has stabilized and splints are removed. Doctor will assess your condition before approving your return flight.
How soon can I return to work or school after septoplasty?
Most people can return to light work or school within 4 to 7 days after surgery, depending on their recovery and job type. Physical jobs or environments with dust/pollutants may require a longer rest period.
Will insurance cover the cost of septoplasty?
Since septoplasty is a medically necessary procedure, it is often covered by insurance in many countries. However, if you’re traveling to Iran as an international patient, you’ll likely pay out-of-pocket though the overall cost is still much lower than in the U.S. or Europe.

Few years ago I had a CT scan and they told me I had a slight deviation that could be managed with medication. At that time I didn’t have any major issues.
But for the past 7–8 months I am experiencing nasal blockage, one side of my nose gets blocked at night and sometimes it happens during the day as well. I also feel like my nose is much more congested compared to before.
I like to know would surgery be able to solve this problem?
Based on the symptoms you described, it seems that your nasal septum deviation has worsened over the years and is now causing more significant blockage and congestion, especially at night. If medications and nasal sprays are no longer effective, septoplasty surgery (correction of the deviated septum) is usually a reliable option to improve breathing. However, an ENT specialist should first examine you to assess the severity of the deviation and check for other contributing factors such as allergies or enlarged turbinates, since these may also need to be treated. Overall, if the blockage is mainly due to the septal deviation, surgery is considered the most effective and long-lasting solution.
